Here are a few of the ways our community is supported. Let us know if you’d like to be a part of the joy that is service.
The ministry of deacon is set forth in Scripture as one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress. Their ministry is under the supervision and authority of the session. (G-2.0201, G-2.0202, Book of Order) Our Board of Deacons serves the church in many ways. Every Sunday a new Deacon of the Week coordinates the needs and concerns of the congregation. Once a month the deacons prepare the elements for communion and assist in serving them to the congregation. On an on-going basis the deacons send cards to the sick, visit our shut-ins, provide meals to those who are ill or have a new baby, monitor and maintain the food pantry, sponsor an annual plant sale, serve on a church ministry team, oversee the Prayer Ministry, coordinate a Christmas service project, send care packages to our military personnel, and remember our college freshmen with cards and packages. They are a devoted group of Christians who stand ready to assist you.

This committee manages the acquisition, disposition, maintenance, and housekeeping of the church building, equipment, manse, property, and supplies. It oversees the legal business of the church, insurance, and the use of rooms and facilities. They maintain a list of major projects that will be completed in the future, depending on the church’s budget. This committee also works hand in hand with Boy Scout Eagle candidates who are undertaking Eagle projects around the church.
Like any home, the house of God requires diligent upkeep and repair. Recent projects include the transformation of the old library into a comfortable conference room and the painting of Fellowship Hall and the adjoining corridor.
If you notice anything that needs attention in and around the church, please notify the church office. If you would like to use your gifts and skills to help us, please contact the church or the current chairperson of the committee whose name appears in the church newsletter. Christian Education programs at Alexandria First Presbyterian Church continue to be a vital and growing part of our church’s ministry. Educational opportunities are available throughout the year to every age group including Sunday School, Junior and Senior High youth groups, confirmation, summer vacation Bible school, adult Bible study, and nursery care.

Our youngest children are in the loving care of a dedicated nursery staff where toys and books are abundant. Speakers in the nursery allow parents visiting their children to hear the worship service too.
Sunday school classes are available for children ages three through high school as an opportunity to grow in their own faith journey. Classes begin after the Children’s Sermon (10:15 a.m.) from Labor Day to Memorial Day. Special care has been taken to coordinate the curriculum with a scope and sequence that follows the church calendar so conversations can continue at home with children and their parents.
On the first Sunday of the month, we celebrate “Family Worship” where children remain in the sanctuary with their parents. Nursery care and preschool activities are also available.

We had a wonderful week at Vacation Bible School this year. Heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who helped make VBS the meaningful and fun time that it was. We’re grateful for each and every child who participated in our program. Your presence made our day! While there are too many staffers to mention individually, we want to thank all the teachers, leaders, youth volunteers, pastors, snack coordinators, music leaders, and all those “behind the scenes.”
Special thanks, too, go to our two sister churches who co-hosted the event with us: Milford and Frenchtown Presbyterian churches. We look forward to next year’
Offered to students in the eighth grade and older, the confirmation program teaches the essentials of our Presbyterian faith and prepares each confirmand to publicly profess his or her faith in Jesus Christ and become an adult member of the church.
Our Youth Ministry consists of Junior High (7th and 8th grade) and Senior High (9th through 12th grade) youth. In addition to Bible study on Sundays, this group enjoys outings throughout the year like snowtubing, go-karting, movie night, and more. Great fellowship and a shared love for Jesus Christ helps build camaraderie and strengthen bonds.
Every summer members of the Senior High youth group embarks on a week-long mission trip to help a community in need, connect with other Christian teens from around the nation, and strengthen their own faith. To help cover the cost, there are fellowship activities hosted by the participants as well as the ongoing clothing drive and ShopRite gift card programs. The group leads a worship service in the fall to share their experiences and God-sightings.
This committee helps direct and encourage members and visitors to reach out with the love and welcome of Jesus. It organizes evangelism programs which are a specific and deliberate response plan for greeting visitors as well as the “Exploring Membership” program.
A dedicated team of E&M members lovingly provides an opportunity for you to linger and chat after each worship service by providing refreshments in Fellowship Hall.
On the administrative side, this team organizes the membership care essential to the church with the administration of the rolls and the coordination of member care by Session elders. They oversee our fellowship pads and warmly greet visitors. On the fellowship side, they schedule diverse fellowship activities and coordinate with the other ministry teams for refreshments and meals for church functions.
Evangelism and Membership hosts the annual church picnic and other occasional events that include all generations. They cook, stir, and bake the delicious meals that precede our annual winter and spring congregational meetings. And they keep tabs on our kitchen supplies to make sure utensils, napkins, coffee, and so on are always well-stocked.
It is the E&M Ministry Team that coordinates the lovely luncheons held before each Exploring Membership class as well as facilitates this event.
We are grateful for their essential and often “behind-the-scenes” care they provide our congregation.
Alexandria Presbyterian Church has a heart for mission! We are called to follow Jesus’ teaching and his example to minister to all who are in need both within and outside the church, locally and around the world. Mindful of this, the Mission Ministry Team–with the approval of Session and the involvement of the congregation–selects a variety of missions to embrace, financially or otherwise each year. If you have an idea for a mission opportunity or a project that needs volunteer help, please contact the church office.

This committee prayerfully discerns who God may be calling to serve in ministry as elders, deacons, financial officers, and Nominating Committee members.
The Nominatng Committee is in the midst of the discernment process to identify these candidates. We ask that you hold them in your prayers as they seek God’s wisdom and guidance in considering leaders for our congregation. Pray that their hearts remain open and patient as they support those who are called to lead. They also seek God’s grace for the candidates as they prayerfully consider their decision to answer the call for this special work within our church. The final slate of candidates will be presented at the congregational meeting in May with terms beginning in June.
The committee is chaired by Joan Carroll and we invite you to reach out to her or Pastor Nick with any questions or concerns.
The Personnel Committee sets needed policies, offers support, undertakes annual evaluations, and nurtures communication with members of the church staff.
