Session

As there were in Old Testament times elders for the government of the people, so the New Testament church provided persons with particular gifts to share in discernment of God’s Spirit and governance of God’s people. Ruling elders, together with teaching elders, exercise leadership, government, spiritual discernment, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church, including ecumenical relationships. (G-2.0301, Book of Order)

As Presbyterians, we believe that the Holy Spirit works best in the church through the will of the people as represented by its elders. Persons elected as elders serve together on the Session, the governing body that oversees the mission, ministries, and governance of Alexandria Church. Each elder serves a three-year term and provides leadership for one of the Ministry Teams of the Session.

Alexandria Church follows The Book of Order which contains the foundations of Presbyterian polity, our form of government, the directory for worship, and the rules of discipline. We also adhere to the Presbyterian Book of Confessions which contains historical statements of what we–as a church–believe.

The Session of Alexandria Church is currently utilizing The Confession of Belhar for its unit of study and growth. The confession was approved by Presbyterian Church USA’s General Assembly in 2016.
